Standing in front of your cart wondering whether you need a frontal or a closure? You’re not alone — the two get confused constantly, but they solve very different styling problems.
A closure and a frontal both do one essential job: they give you a finished, natural-looking hairline so your install reads as your own scalp, not a wig cap. Where they part ways is how much of your head they cover and how much styling freedom you get. Once you understand that, choosing is easy.
The quick answer
- Closure — a smaller piece (commonly 4"x4", 5"x5", or 6"x6") that closes off the top or crown of an install. Best when you want a single part and a low-maintenance finish.
- Frontal — a larger piece that recreates your entire front hairline, typically ear-to-ear (about 13"x4" or 13"x6") or a full 360. Best when you want to part anywhere, pull hair back, and frame your face off the forehead.
Size & coverage
This is the biggest difference. A closure covers a comparatively small section — usually the crown or the top of the head — and lets the rest of your install do the work around it.
A frontal covers far more real estate. There are two main styles:
- Ear-to-ear frontal: recreates the hairline from one ear across to the other, so your whole front section is the piece.
- 360 frontal: wraps the entire perimeter of your head, giving you a natural hairline all the way around — ideal if you love high ponytails or updos.
More coverage means more versatility, but also a bigger install. That trade-off is really what you’re choosing between.
Base material: lace vs. silk
Both closures and frontals are built on a base — and that base is usually lace or silk.
- Lace base: breathable and easy to melt into the skin for a seamless hairline. This is the most popular choice and what most people mean by a “lace closure” or “lace frontal.”
- Silk base: has an extra layer that mimics the look of the scalp at the part, so the knots are hidden without bleaching. Many people love how realistic the parting looks.
Same idea, two finishes — both deliver a natural look when installed well.
How they’re installed
Closures are typically sewn in along with your bundles, sitting at the crown to seal the top of the install. Frontals are usually bonded (with adhesive) along the hairline so they lie flat against the skin and let you wear your hair off your face. In both cases, a skilled stylist makes all the difference — precise placement and a clean melt are what turn a good piece into an undetectable one.
So which one should you choose?
- Choose a closure if you want a quick, lower-maintenance install, you’re happy with one part (middle, side, or free part), and you want to protect more of your natural hair underneath.
- Choose a frontal if you want to part your hair anywhere, slick it back, wear ponytails, or fully reframe your face — and you don’t mind a little more upkeep.
Either way, the secret to a flawless result is matching hair type and shade to your own. Frame your match by texture — fine, coarse, straight, natural wave, or natural curl — rather than by anything else, and you’ll get the most seamless blend. Not sure where you land? Frequently asked questions
Is a closure or a frontal better for beginners? A closure is usually the easier starting point — smaller, faster to install, and lower maintenance. A frontal offers more styling freedom but rewards a bit more experience or a trusted stylist.
Can I dye or bleach my closure or frontal? Yes — because it’s 100% human hair, you can color and style it. As with any extensions, do a strand test and consider a professional for lifting so the hair stays healthy.
Will the knots show? With proper installation — bleaching knots on lace, or choosing a silk base that conceals them — the parting reads like your own scalp.
