How to Evaluate Real Human Hair Quality

The Friction Test (Cuticle Alignment)
Authentic 'Remy' hair is defined by its cuticle alignment. To test this, take a small strand and slide your fingers from top to bottom; it should feel smooth. Then, slide them from bottom to top; you should feel a slight resistance or 'friction scale.' If it feels equally smooth in both directions, the cuticles have likely been stripped in an acid bath.
The Burn Test (Protein vs. Plastic)
Real human hair is made of protein (keratin). When exposed to a flame, it should singe, turn into ash that crumbles between your fingers, and smell like burnt feathers. Synthetic hair or blends will melt, drip, smell like acrid plastic, and form a hard black bead that cannot be crushed.
Detecting the Acid Bath & Silicone Coating
Many vendors use harsh acid baths to strip cuticles and then coat the hair in heavy silicone to make it feel soft for the first two washes. To detect this, wash a sample with a clarifying, sulfate-free shampoo. If the hair becomes instantly tangled, dull, or 'ratty' after the silicone is removed, it was never true Remy quality.
What is the difference between Remy and Non-Remy hair?
Remy hair has all cuticles facing the same direction, preventing tangling and matting. Non-Remy hair is collected from floor scraps where cuticles are mixed, leading to severe tangling unless it is processed with harsh acids.
Why does my hair feel dry after washing?
Real human hair needs moisture because it is no longer attached to a scalp. However, if it feels unnaturally dry or brittle after the first wash, it may have been over-processed or heat-damaged during manufacturing.
